Remember Tony Stark’s special Holographic Computer, the one he used to create his metal-clad suit in the first “Iron Man” movie? Well, soon enough you could enjoy a similar gesture controlled computer experience right in the driver’s seat of a Volkswagen. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, VW unveiled its Golf R Touch concept car, which features some out-of-this-world technologies that you could see in the VW lineup down the road.
One of the most interesting technologies is an infotainment display with Gesture Control, which allows drivers to wave a hand or flick a wrist to control various vehicle functions. Current Volkswagen infotainment systems are already pretty smart, with the ability to sense when a hand is nearing the screen. However, for the next phase of its tech revolution VW is taking the idea of intuitive control to new boundaries.
The VW Golf R Touch uses cameras that can both detect and assign meaning to different hand movements. Along with enhancing convenience, a technology like this would further synchronize the relationship between us and our cars, or man in machine to put it in other words.
The concept Touch infotainment system makes most knobs and buttons obsolete and emphasizes the importance of personalization when it comes to future vehicle operation. It’s also pretty friggin’ substantial, with three large displays including: a primary 12.8-inch high-res screen; an 8-inch Control Center screen below it with climate and other vehicle controls; and a 12.3-inch Active Info Display that is essentially a futuristic version of an instrument cluster. "The two inventions of the century, the car and the computer, are gradually coming closer together. We need to design future mobility to be even more intelligent and even more networked," said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen AG.
