Volkswagen is putting an end to production of the convertible-topped Eos at its Portugal plant this coming May, meaning this is basically the last year customers have to purchase and place orders for the roadster before new inventory runs out. While it was well-reviewed by many publications and beloved by its owners, sources say Eos is being discontinued to make way for a larger, less expensive to manufacturer Golf Cabriolet, although this hasn't yet been confirmed by VW.
In their review of the current 2015-model-year Eos, Edmunds.com editors said, "Eos deserves more consideration than it gets. With the features and build quality of more expensive luxury convertibles, the VW Eos is a smart choice for drop-top sun seekers."
While it may be a bit surprising that the turbocharged roadster is being discontinued, sources say the car's hard-top is more expensive to manufacturer than soft-tops, like the Golf Cabriolet, and that consumer preferences have moved toward soft-tops.
Eos has had a successful run during its nine years on the market. Autoblog even said it was at one point Germany’s best-selling hard-top convertible. Roughly 230,000 Eos models have been sold worldwide since the car first hit dealerships in 2007, which is an achievement that shouldn't go unnoticed.
