While VW's lineup only consists of cars and SUVs in America, the automaker has had success in other countries with a compact truck called the Amarok. Back in 2009, there were discussions about whether or not to bring the truck to the U.S., but ultimately Volkswagen decided against it. However, recently the company has stated that the idea is back on the table.
During a roundtable discussion at the Geneva Motor Show, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer, head of VW Group powertrain development stated, "We are just reworking our truck strategy, and this is part of thinking about it."
Thus far, VW has not given the project a green light, but is considering whether or not it would be an attractive business move. America does have the largest pickup truck market in the world after all, so throwing a competitor in the ring could be beneficial. Though, if VW does decide to enter the U.S. truck market, we probably won't receive the Amarok. According to key personnel, a larger truck specifically designed for American tastes might be the better way to go.
The news of these talks is very exciting for Camelback VW. We'd be happy to add a truck to our already diverse vehicle lineup and we're sure that many VW lovers would appreciate having this option, too.
