Although you may not be familiar with the Polo, it is historically one of Volkswagen's most popular vehicles. Production began over 50 years ago, and globally, it enjoyed tremendous success with over 20 million sales. Volkswagen first introduced the Polo in 1975, and since then, the practical VW has earned recognition for its quality design, unique style, innovation, and affordability. To commemorate the Polo's history, VW is introducing two Polo models at the Bremen Classic Motorshow.
A Fresh Look at a Classic
To honor the Polo, Volkswagen's Classic team has selected two Polo models to display at the Bremen Classic Motorshow in northern Germany, which is an exhibition featuring classic vehicles. First, the team has chosen to display the Polo L, a model VW launched in 1975. The Polo L represents the initial model that VW released to consumers. The Polo L appears as a small, simple, and boxy sedan that was a popular and affordable choice for families at the time of its launch. During its production, the Polo L featured a 0.9-litre engine with a power output of up to 82 miles per hour. For a more luxurious driving experience, consumers could opt for a package that added carpeting, side trim strips, and air conditioning. The Polo L also had two rows of seats, complete with a folding second row of seats, and nearly 32 cubic feet of storage space. The Polo L could comfortably hold up to four people, and its engineering included a water-cooled system to help prevent the vehicle from overheating.
Along with the popular family-oriented Polo L, Volkswagen also showcases a hill climb Polo at the Bremen Motorshow. The hill climb Polo is a sportier variant of the classic Polo. This model was traditionally used as a racing vehicle by Volkswagen, appearing on racetracks worldwide for nearly 20 years. Volkswagen then removed the hill climb Polo for a while before reintroducing it in 2022 to compete again. The revamped hill climb Polo participated in the International Hill Climb Cup in 2022. It was complete with improvements, including a shorter gear ratio to facilitate performance and a rollover cage to make it safer in the event of a rollover.
