Acura All Wheel Drive Vs. Four Wheel Drive

Many of the vehicles that are being sold these days come with a variety of features. Depending on what model you're looking at, you may have the opportunity to choose between AWD and 4WD. Some people assume that these are the same thing, but they are actually different setups. Though it can be confusing to understand the differences between the two, let's discuss each of these systems so you can make an informed decision about which vehicle is right for you.

What is All-Wheel Drive?

All-wheel drive means that the powertrain is powering both the front and rear wheels of the vehicle. There is a full-time AWD option that moves all four of your wheels continuously. A part-time system uses its two-wheel drive mode for the most part, though it will switch over to AWD when necessary for traction.

The AWD feature functions without the driver needing to do anything to engage the system, though a few models are on the market that provide more options for control. All of the wheels will receive torque by way of a set of differentials, couplings, and clutches.

What is Four-Wheel Drive?

Four-wheel drive is a feature that you'll typically find in larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks. It uses a set of differentials in the front, center, and rear along with transfer cases and couplings as a way of transferring power to all four of the wheels.

The 4WD design will send torque to all of the wheels on your vehicle as needed, and it comes in full-time and part-time mode just like AWD does. You can also choose between low and high ranges when driving. This is usually set up through an electronic switch or a lever. You can achieve the highest level of traction through your low setting, while a high setting is beneficial for road surfaces that are just slightly slick like sand, snow, or gravel.

Volkswagen AWD

You need to get into the type of vehicle that you would like to drive. If you want an all-wheel-drive vehicle, you should be able to get that. If you feel that you will be safest on the road in that type of vehicle, you should find a car with that type of drive system in place. You can find an all-wheel-drive Volkswagen, and that will appeal to you in other ways, as well.
