The Volkswagen Passat’s LATCH system was recently tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, whose researchers found that it performs excellently for those with little ones. Exceeding in all areas - from ease of use to ease of access - Passat’s LATCH system earned top ratings from the IIHS.
To receive the IIHS’ best possible rating of “Good,” which only three vehicles out of 102 earned, the Passat had to meet several different criteria. First, the car’s LATCH anchors had to be no more than ¾ of an inch deep where the bottom and back cushions intersect (i.e., the seat bight). The lower anchors also had to be easy to get around, with a clearance angle over 54 degrees. In addition, tether anchors couldn’t be located on the floor, ceiling, under seats or at the bottom of seatbacks; they had to be located within a specific top region of the backseat area.
These and other factors were considered when rating Passat’s LATCH system and the car excelled in all areas of the test. In addition, we can tell you that the VW Passat has lots of legroom, which makes it easy to put in car seats and also means that front-passenger comfort isn’t compromised.
