A car might start shaking while accelerating or braking and there are some common causes to look out for. From the brakes to the engine, certain issues can offer clues about what's wrong with your vehicle. However, to get the most accurate diagnosis for your vehicle, schedule a service appointment with the certified mechanics at Camelback Volkswagen.

Tires

One of the top causes of a vehicle shaking is a tire balance issue. Tires take quite a bit of impact from the road, including regular driving and mishaps such as running over curbs and potholes. Over time this can offset things like the alignment and tread of the tires. When this occurs, the car should be serviced by a professional as it may be overdue for an alignment and tire rotation.

Brakes

If you notice shaking or vibrating only when braking, then your brakes should be inspected as soon as possible. A vehicle's brakes can cause shaking if the rotors need to be turned or if the brake pads are severely worn out. Many brakes have a lifespan of about 50,000 miles, but their lifespan varies by car and driving habits. Sometimes if you hear squealing or grinding while applying the brakes, that may also be a sign of brake issues.

Engine

The engine or its components can also sometimes be a source related to car shaking. In particular, higher-mileage cars should have the spark plugs checked if they haven't been replaced. The spark plugs usually last about 80,000 miles, but some can last 100,000 miles or longer.

Driveline

The driveline transfers power from the engine and transmission to the wheels. If components involved throughout that process are not functioning properly, such as the transmission itself or differential, shaking may occur. Also, any shaking in the suspension system may be attributed to faulty axles. Axles that are bent or twisted will generate shaking that's usually worse as you increase speed. The CV joints, which are boot-like structures, can cause problems if they get damaged and allow debris to reach the axles.

If your car has been shaking abnormally, visit our auto repair shop in Phoenix for a thorough diagnosis.
